I remember seeing hedgehogs in the garden almost every night as a child but we hardly ever see them now. Between 30% and 75% of rural hedgehogs have been lost in the UK since 2002, mostly due to hedgerow loss but also due to its preference for villages rather than the open countryside. Hence, predation by cats and dogs and the car tyre have undoubtedly cost it dearly. Imagine if they had consciousness and could draw out their ancestry.
