Painting the French Riviera, Royal Academy

We hurtled down to this exhibition at the RA and met our good London friend and fellow artist, Stuart. The show offered a fascinating exploration of how landscape has inspired artistic innovation, from Cézanne and Monet to Matisse, Picasso and Nicolas de Staël.

What resonated most is the way these artists moved beyond simply depicting a place, responding instead to its atmosphere, light, colour and emotional character. The Mediterranean landscape became their catalyst for experimentation, with each artist finding a distinctive visual language through which to interpret their surroundings.

As a contemporary landscape artist, I find this dialogue between observation and interpretation particularly compelling. My own practice is rooted in capturing the landscape, exploring how a sense of place can be translated into art through personal perception and a contemporary sensibility. This exhibition is a timely reminder that landscape painting is never merely about recording what we see; it is about discovering what a place makes us feel, and finding a way to express that experience.

A stimulating exhibition that celebrates the enduring capacity of landscape to challenge, inspire and renew the language of painting.
