I wasn’t accepted to the Ferens Open this year (my entry was possibly a little dark, even for Hull folk) but a trip north to see the assembled work in the Ferens Open exhibition is always worth the trip. There is always a lot of work to see but some notable pieces are below, which include some high-quality paintings. As usual, I was drawn to paint and pencil work. The triptych of North Sea fishermen delivering their catch was great, both cleverly composed and with a nicely contrasting colour palette. It really evoked the history of Hull docks, as it was when I was a wide-eyed kid.
