Sujata Setia & Joseph Wright, QUAD & Derby Museum

Sujata Setia is of South Asian origin and is a survivor of domestic abuse. The QUAD in Derby had an exhibition of her work entitled ‘A Thousand Cuts. These were beautifully created paper cuts highlighting the chipping away at the soul of the abused in our society. Thin paper highlighted the fragility of those who go through these horrific experiences. The dark lighting in the space added to the tension. A powerful and humbling experience overall.

Joseph Wright is the famous son of Derby, and the recent exhibition of his early drawings at the Derby Museum, many of which were showing for the first time, was fascinating. The younger Wright certainly had drawing skill, which would have been useful when someone called Handel walked into his studio and became the life model for day. I can only imagine the pressure to perform.
